For nine of those years, he also was solo cornetist. Mitchell played trumpet in the Band from 1946 until 1960 when he became its Assistant Leader. Mitchell (LTC AUS Retired), one of the Band’s most prominent trumpet players, knew Bach from his earlier orchestral days.
